A Cure For The Sedentary Epidemic

The Sedentary Epidemic is real. It raises a really basic question….

Why are so many of us not exercising?

Researchers wondered if gym class had anything to do with this issue. A survey ensued. A survey that over 1,000 people filled out….

I’m just going to state the obvious now. Because the survey was on a 100% volunteer basis, you know the only people who filled it out are those that either loathed or loved gym class. All the neutral people had better things to do.

The Dude Has Better Things To Do.

Judging from my extensive Yelp! and TripAdvisor research I will also posit the following. There was definitely more people who loathed gym class that felt inclined to take the survey than those that loved it.

Now that we know that roughly 90% of all those who took the survey were heavily negatively biased let’s talk about what we learned.

Bad Time in Gym Class=Unhealthy life

After correlating participants responses about gym class with their current exercise habits the researchers concluded that if you didn’t like gym class you probably aren’t working out.

Okay, let’s assume this is true.

I have a really hard time being okay with this.

It probably is true to a certain degree. But, what does that say about us as a species?

We need to learn to move past these types of things so that a decades-old event doesn’t affect our present day happiness.

This is one thing that animals have on us. They have no problem living in the moment.

The homo-sapien is unique insofar as we have a chronic stress response. This means we allow things like fear of the future and past trauma to affect our current physiological state, in the present moment. Even though they hold no actual weight in the current moment.

All other creatures live in the now and only have stress responses when their lives are immediately threatened. For further reading on this check out Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers.

How do we overcome this?

Knowledge Is More Than Half The Battle

By simply being aware of past traumas many people are able to overcome many of the negative side effects of the traumatic event.

That is my solution for this gym class issue.

Recognize that you may have not had the most delightful physical education as a child and move on.

How dare you, as an adult, allow your current health to take a hit because you were picked last in kickball.

Practice Makes Perfect

Deviate From Standard Advice

It’s crazy to me that anyone would allow their efficiency, health, or reputation be impacted by whether or not they were the first one “out” in dodgeball.

We have real problems that need solving. Global issues. Our personal health needs to be handled first if we expect to make any headway on pollution, an impending AI boom, or global terrorism.

Apparently, ⅔ of adults don’t exercise.

*Shakes head in disgust.*

It isn’t an option and there is no excuse for not doing what your body requires.

I worry that if breathing wasn’t involuntary ⅔ of adults would choose not to breathe because it takes too much effort.

3 Step Process To Start Exercising Today

  1. Whatever your previous reason for not exercising is now your fuel. One of the best coping mechanisms for dealing with a traumatic event is moving hundreds of pounds of weight or running as fast as you can until you can’t any longer.
  2. Click here for a free basic weightlifting program. Or here for 30 Days To Peak Performance (It’ll take you from Zero to Hero in 30 days while teaching you exactly why you do each aspect of the plan so you can improvise, adapt, and overcome.)
  3. Go to the gym and execute the plan.

You are an adult and this is a requirement. Stop being a drain on society. Go get some!

Simplicity Is Hard To Ignore.

I just solved the sedentary epidemic. It is this simple. You just have to care and be an adult.
